I know my dog is noisy. Should
I punish him when I get home from work ?
| No,
certainly not ! A dog is incapable of associating two events which are separate
in time, so he won't understand why you are punishing him. In other words, you
have to react immediately, which is not always possible. |

I scold my dog when he barks in my
presence, but that doesn't stop him barking when I'm not there. Why ?
| Punishment
can never be effective if it is not systematic. You have to be able to intervene
at once every time he misbehaves. For example, if the postman comes to your home
while you are out, your dog will bark without being punished. On the contrary,
he will feel rewarded when the postman goes away ! | Back
Why
should I stop my dog expressing himself ? After all, he enjoys the right of free
speech ! | Your
dog has different ways of communicating : through sound, it is true, but also
by sight, touch and smell, which are even more important. Barking is not true
language. That is why you are not depriving him of speech by controlling his barking.
Your dog has many other ways of communicating his emotions to you (by mimicking,
postures, caresses). | Back
Is
punishment more effective than reward ? No
! Effective punishment must be unpleasant to the dog and administered systematically
at the time of the misdeed, which is extremely restricting. The dog must always
be within reach at the right moment, otherwise the punishment is quite useless!
Reward, on the other hand, does not need to be systematic, and gives better results
during training. That is why it is better to surprise the dog during his misdeed
(without punishing him) and reward him as soon as he is good again.
Back
If a dog has done
something wrong while you are away, should I punish him when you come back ?
| No
! A dog lives strictly in the present: a few seconds after his misdeed, he
has already forgotten about it. The only way to train him is to catch him
in the act. If the master acts a few minutes later, the dog does not understand
the reason for his anger. The action is therefore both ineffective and stressful
for the dog! When the dog has a guilty look, the true reason is that he senses
his master's dissatisfaction. A dog is extremely sensitive to attitudes (posture,
gestures of annoyance, and so on), and he fears punishment to come. So when he
slinks away into a corner with his ears down, he is reacting to the attitude of
his master and not to what he has done himself. |

A dog must be shown when he has done something wrong, so that he learns
who is master. | No
! The dog must not see his master act, otherwise he may associate his presence
with the prohibition. In other words, he will learn to be good when the master
is present, but not when he is absent... The solution consists in creating
an effect of surprise, at a distance, without the dog seeing his master. For this
purpose, a remote controlled spray collar is now available. What must not be forgotten
is to reward the dog warmly when he is good again! |
Back
Basically, a spray collar is
still nothing more than a remote controlled punishment collar, like the electric
shock and ultrasonic collars ! No
! The spray collar is genuinely on its own among training collars that can
be operated at a distance. The spray collar is the first new-generation radio-controlled
device to use the disruptive stimulus. It should on no account be compared with
the older generation of punishment products. The major differences are: its
efficiency (in comparison with ultrasonic collars, which have a success rate no
higher than 30%) its harmlessness (in comparison with electric shock collars,
which can increase the anxiety or aggressiveness of dogs).
