The specialist's column...By Xavier Aubry,
veterinary surgeon and behavioural specialist

  • The disruptive stimulus (the surprise effect)
The behaviour which we seek to eliminate is organized in the form of a sequence. This means that to fulfil it, the dog has to perform, in order, a series of acts which are linked together to result in a specific final action. It is possible to interrupt this sequence by providing information which is unconnected with the dog's present situation. This surprising information, which the dog is unable to recognize, is known as a disruptive stimulus. This stimulus will momentarily interrupt the behaviour so that he becomes attentive to what is going on around him.

  • Positive reinforcement (reward)
There are two ways to train a dog: punishment or reward (positive reinforcement). It is much more effective to train a dog by motivating him. Studies have shown that reward is five times as efficient as punishment. Furthermore, punishment misapplied or administered too frequently carries a risk of causing anxiety problems. Indeed, excessive punishment is always painful and stressful. This is why specialists agree in saying that one should train without punishment.

    Some scientific research results...

The MasterPlus remote controlled training spray collar was assessed in collaboration with Dr. Patrick Pageat (a veterinary practitioner specializing in behaviour):
  • The results obtained, which were compared with those of other training techniques, were faster and of better quality, with a much lower relapse rate.
  • The efficiency rate for the MasterPlus was 90% in dogs displaying training problems.

  • The principle
The study, carried out by an independent institute under the direction of Dr. Pageat, consisted in assessing the efficacy of the odourless spray in comparison with a traditional training method (throwing something close to the dog to frighten him). Dogs are in the habit of eating whatever they may find lying on the ground. Two groups of 10 dogs were assessed every 5 days for 35 days over a course containing 10 baits: each mark represents the sum of baits consumed.

  • Results
The training spray collar is more effective than the traditional method. After 35 days, 90% of the dogs consumed less than 15% of the baits (success). Only 20% of the dogs attained this level by the traditional method. 80% of the dogs consumed no bait at all (complete success). No dog achieved this result by the traditional method.

  • The specialist's opinion
"This study confirms the superiority of the disruptive stimulus over other training methods: training is better and faster."
