SPRAY TECHNOLOGY

The behaviour which we seek to eliminate is organized in the form of a sequence. This means that to fulfil it, the dog has to perform, in order, a series of acts which are linked together to result in a specific final action.

You can interrupt this chain by giving your dog a "bizarre" piece of information which has nothing to do with the actual situation. A surprise event of this type that the dog does not recognise is called a disruptive stimulus. It interrupts the behaviour pattern, makes him pause and in consequence he listens to what is going on in his surroundings. This gives you the chance to redirect him towards some other more desirable activity. The surprise effect produced by the Aboistop or MasterPlus collars is due to a combination of several different types of stimulus which affect almost all of the animal's different sensory systems: the cold spray stimulates the senses of touch, sight and hearing all at once.Repeated sessions give rapid results. The use of disruptive stimuli represents genuine progress compared with that of pain stimuli which may cause distress and entail other problems.

Rather than punishing your dog, a disruptive stimulus just distracts him for a moment and thereby makes him receptive to some other kind of activity. However, unless you take full advantage of this brief moment to put him back on the right path, he may go back to his previous preoccupation. In other words, dogs learn that something is not allowed more quickly if there is an alternative available.

This alternative is usually a different type of behaviour that is desired by the owner and, in order to encourage the change, the dog should be rewarded for the new behaviour pattern. Dogs can be rewarded in various ways with enthusiastic encouragement and games being the most useful. However, especially with young puppies, rewards can take the form of petting and treats. If food is chosen as a reward, the giving of treats should be spaced out so that your "authority" does not become 100 per cent dependent on it. Above all, never forget that, if the reward is given within a fraction of a second of a certain type of behaviour, the dog will come to associate that type of behaviour with encouragement but, if the lapse of time is any greater, he may believe that you are rewarding him for some subsequent type of behaviour.
